Yellowstone Grizzly Bears to Stay on Endanged Species List

Yellowstone-area grizzly bears will stay on the list of threatened and endangered species, at least for now.  Federal Court Judge Donald Molloy Tuesday upheld his previous ruling placing the animals back on the list.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service argued that grizzlies around the park had had recovered from near-extermination and no longer needed protections under the Endangered Species Act.  But in September, U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy said climate change and lax regulations threatened to undermine the bears' recovery.  He ordered the bears back on the threatened species list.  But government attorneys asked him to reconsider.  They claimed the bears would thrive without special federal protection.
